Our features editor shares her tricks to handle natural curly hair.

I have always had an interesting relationship with my curly hair. Having curly hair can be very difficult to manage, but there are a few handy tricks to keep your curls alive and fresh even when they start to become grey.

Hair goes through many stages throughout our lives, especially curly hair. I have experienced both the extremely desert-dry hair and an oily scalp all in the span of a few months. Naturally, one of the biggest changes in your 50s is hormones. After 50, the growth of hair is slower and stressful environments can cause more hair fall.

Firstly, stop brushing your curls! Use your fingers to get rid of knots. There’s a super trendy method called plopping for curl enhancement- keep wet hair wrapped in a towel for 20 minutes. I rely on this method because I don’t have much hair but it is very dense.

If this method doesn’t suit your hair, simply don’t avoid your trim schedule.Your haircut needs to enhance your curls so don’t cut them in layers. It will help for your hair to not look thin or damaged. Also, a regular trim is always pleasant, it helps your hair breathe.

For years, I slept with my hair unprotected on cotton pillowcases. I used to wake up looking like someone gave me an electric shock. This is the worst way to treat your curls. Don’t put your curls through this rough military training. Let them sleep on smooth silk or bamboo pillowcases or use a satin cap.

This love-hate relationship of mine has turned into one of admiration. Treat your curls well and they will treat you with their dazzling look, regardless of whether they are black, ginger, blonde or grey.
