Birdwatching: The hobby not even a pandemic can stop

Observing birds is a relaxing hobby that can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age. You can even do it online, and inform yourself by reading some newly released books!

This hobby — birding — is a form of wildlife observation that consists of observing birds as a recreational activity. However, it doesn’t have to be all about going outside. It can be practiced as a hobby from inside one’s home. All that is required is an Internet connection and anyone can try this activity by watching live public webcams.

A new book called ‘RSPB Spotlight Crows’, written by naturalist Mike Unwin is set to release this year. Mike looks at the biology and ecology of all eight UK corvids (the family of crows), investigating why crows have become embedded in the UK’s culture. The book is a perfect light read for those who enjoy bird watching. However, for those feeling more intrigued, author Rosemary Mosco will be releasing her book ‘A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching: Getting to Know the World's Most Misunderstood Bird’ in the second part of the year.

Believe it or not, birding is also practiced competitively in some parts of the world where there are organised competitions. These events encourage people to find large numbers of species of birds within a certain time limit or area.

You don’t have to be an expert in wildlife like Chris Packham in order to try birdwatching. Anyone can do it, even from home, which has become more evident during the pandemic. Live streams of birds and other wildlife animals can be found on platforms such as Youtube and can be enjoyed by anyone.
