Not only Gen Z but Gen X and boomers have taken to TikTok and Instagram and they are taking home big numbers outside of their regular jobs.
According to a recent study, 7% of TikTok users are above 50 and the overall number of adult users has grown 5.5 times in the last year.
Dr. Tim McNeely, aka the dancing dentist, has seen a growth of over a million new followers in the past year. The 47-year-old Tennessee resident has big name sponsors such as Marc Jacobs. This has helped him establish his own business by selling merchandise, whilst also practicing dentistry regularly. All he did to gain his popularity was turn on his phone camera and dance to popular songs in his white coat.
After you gain over 100k followers, it is easy to make anywhere between £300- £1,000 per product placement in your videos. Similarly, on Instagram, you can earn £540 per post, excluding paid sponsorships and adverts.
Alyson Walsh is a UK-based 50-something fashion journalist and Instagram influencer. Her content mainly revolves around providing fashion and lifestyle tips for women, and she has a strong following of over 60k. Her username “@thatsnotmyage” perfectly describes her passion for both fashion-related writing and living her life to the fullest on her social media.
Content does not have to be related to your field, like Dr. Tim who is not a professional dancer but certainly a professional TikToker. There are numerous influencers on both TikTok and Instagram who have proved that anybody can be a social media influencer and earn that extra cash.
